How Much Gold Can I Buy?

Quick answer. Divide your budget by the gold price. At today's spot price of $3,929.50 per troy ounce, $10,000 buys 2.54 troy ounces of gold, which is 0.17 of a pound. A full pound takes $57,305. Those are the most gold the money can buy; a real order gets a few percent less, because every seller adds a premium.

How the Calculation Works

There are only two steps.

  1. Budget ÷ spot price = troy ounces. Gold is priced per troy ounce, so this gives the weight of pure gold directly.
  2. Troy ounces ÷ 14.583 = pounds. An ordinary pound holds 14.583 troy ounces. Don't divide by 16; that's the number of kitchen ounces in a pound, and it understates your gold by about 9%.

To allow for a premium, divide the budget by (1 + the premium) first. With a 4% premium, $10,000 buys what $9,615 would buy at spot.

The calculator above does all three, and also counts the whole one-ounce coins your budget covers and the money left over. The table under it gives the same answer for six common budgets with JavaScript switched off, and it updates with the price like every other figure on this site.

Why the Result Is a Ceiling

The spot price is a wholesale figure. Nobody ships a coin to your door for it. What you pay on top depends on what you order:

If you buyTypical premium$10,000 buys about
At spot (not possible at retail)0%100% of the table figure
Kilo or 10 oz barsabout 1–3%97–99% of it
1 oz bars, Krugerrandsabout 2–4%96–98% of it
American Gold Eaglesabout 3–6%94–97% of it
Fractional coinshigherless again

Premium ranges are typical figures from 2026 dealer guides in normal conditions, not quotes. Two more things shave the result. Paying by card commonly adds 2–4% over a bank wire. And gold comes in whole pieces: a budget that works out to 2.4 ounces buys two one-ounce coins and leaves change, or buys smaller coins at a higher premium to use it up.

Turn any quote into a premium with the premium per pound calculator before you agree to it.

Budgets in Pounds

Thinking in pounds is useful once the budget is large, because it tells you what the order physically is.

  • Under about $14,326 you are buying a few coins, less than a quarter of a pound. A small stack that fits in a coin tube.
  • Around $28,653 is half a pound: seven one-ounce coins and change.
  • Around $57,305 is a pound: fifteen coins, or a ten-ounce bar and five coins. Our homepage shows three ways to build it.
  • Around $114,610 is two pounds, close to one kilo bar ($126,336).
  • Around $573,052 is ten pounds: a quantity normally kept in a depository, not at home.

Goldco's Offer, in Pounds

Our sponsored partner, Goldco, currently offers up to 5% back in free silver on qualified orders of $50,000 to $99,999, and up to 10% on qualified orders of $100,000 or more.* Because the tiers are in dollars and gold is priced by weight, where they fall in pounds moves with the market:

Offer tierOrder sizePounds of gold at today's spot
Up to 5% back in free silver*$50,000 – $99,9990.87 lb and up
Up to 10% back in free silver*$100,000 or more1.75 lb and up

Today, a single pound of gold falls in the first tier.

Three honest notes. The offer applies only to orders Goldco treats as qualified, so have the representative confirm yours in writing. A bonus doesn't replace a price check: work out the premium on the gold itself first, then count the silver. And Goldco doesn't publish a minimum order. If your budget is $5,000 or $10,000, we can't tell you whether Goldco will take the order; ask, and compare an online dealer's posted prices as well.

Worked Examples

$10,000. $10,000 ÷ $3,929.50 = 2.54 troy ounces at spot. In practice that is 2 whole one-ounce coins, with money left over that can go toward fractional pieces at a higher premium.

The price of a pound. $57,305 ÷ $3,929.50 = 14.583 troy ounces, exactly one pound. With a 3% premium the same pound costs $59,024; put the other way, $57,305 buys about 14.16 ounces at a 3% premium.

$100,000. $100,000 ÷ $3,929.50 = 25.45 troy ounces, or 1.75 lb at spot. At this size most of the order can be 10 oz bars ($39,295 each at spot), with the remainder in one-ounce coins you can sell separately.

$250,000. 63.62 troy ounces, or 4.36 lb. At this size, bar premiums of 1–2% against coin premiums of 3–6% are a difference of several thousand dollars, and storage in a depository becomes the normal choice. See storing a pound of gold.
