Quick answer. The gold price per pound is $57,305 in US dollars, as of November 3, 2026. That is the spot price of $3,929.50 per troy ounce multiplied by 14.583, the number of troy ounces in one pound of weight. It's the value of pure gold before a seller's premium.

How the Per-Pound Price Is Worked Out

Nobody quotes gold by the pound. The market quotes one number, the price of a troy ounce, and the per-pound price is that number in a bigger unit.

The conversion has one step. A pound is defined as 453.59237 grams. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Divide the first by the second and you get 14.5833 troy ounces to the pound. Multiply by today's spot price and you have $57,305.

The step people get wrong is the 14.583. A pound is usually described as 16 ounces, and it is: 16 ordinary ounces of 28.35 grams each. The troy ounce is a different, heavier ounce. Sixteen troy ounces would weigh 497.7 grams, almost 10% more than a pound.

If you see a per-pound gold price that is about 10% above ours, this is almost certainly why. Smaller differences between sites come from timing: gold moves by the minute, and each site stamps a different moment. Ours is under the figure at the top of this page.

Dollars Per Pound, Not Pounds Sterling

"Gold price per pound" has a second meaning, and search results mix the two. In Britain, "the gold price in pounds" means the price of an ounce of gold in pounds sterling (£), the currency. That figure is a price per troy ounce expressed in British money, and it has nothing to do with weight.

Everything on this page is the other meaning: US dollars per pound of weight (lb). If a number you've found elsewhere carries a £ sign, it's the sterling price of one ounce, not the price of a pound of gold.

The Last Year in Dollars Per Pound

Over the past 52 weeks, gold futures have closed between $56,573 and $81,465 per pound. The highest futures close on record is $5,318.40 per troy ounce, which is $77,560 per pound, set in January 2026.

Those figures come from COMEX gold futures, the exchange contract that has a clean daily history, converted at 14.583 troy ounces to the pound. The headline price at the top of the page is spot. The two track each other closely; today the futures price is $3,941.90 an ounce, a gap of +$12.40 from spot. We label each rather than blend them. The chart on our homepage plots the per-pound price over one month, six months, one year, five years and the full history.

Because a pound holds nearly fifteen ounces, moves look large in this unit. A $100 change in the ounce price is a $1,458 change in the pound price. That's arithmetic, not extra volatility: in percentage terms a pound moves exactly as an ounce does.

Price Per Pound vs. What an Order Costs

The per-pound price is where a real order starts, not where it ends.

A premium is added. Sellers charge above spot to cover minting, shipping and their margin. Typical ranges run from about 1–2% for kilo bars to about 3–6% for American Gold Eagles, so a pound bought as product costs roughly $58,165 to $59,884. The premium per pound calculator converts any quote into that percentage.

A pound isn't a product. Gold is sold by the troy ounce, so a pound is ordered as pieces: usually fifteen one-ounce coins, or a ten-ounce bar and five coins. That is 15 troy ounces, $58,942 at spot, slightly more than a pound. See a pound of gold in coins and gold bars by the pound.

Selling works the other way. A dealer buying gold back pays a little under spot. The gap between what you pay and what you'd receive on the same day is the round-trip cost of owning physical gold, and it's worth knowing before you buy something you might sell soon.

If you're starting from a dollar amount and not a weight, the how much gold can I buy calculator runs the sum in reverse.
