Gold at Home or Gold in an IRA?

$57,305 a pound of gold, either way

Per troy ounce: $3,929.50

Gold spot $3,929.50/troy oz · $57,305/lb · updated

Quick answer. The gold is the same; the owner and the address are different. With home delivery you buy with your own money, the gold is shipped to you, and it is yours to keep, sell or give away. With a gold IRA the gold is bought with retirement funds, the account owns it, and federal law requires the account's trustee to hold it at a depository. A pound of gold, $57,305 at today's spot price, fits either route.

What an IRA Is Allowed to Hold

The tax code starts from a ban. An IRA that buys a "collectible" is treated as having paid that money out to you, and the law's list of collectibles includes "any metal or gem" and "any stamp or coin". Gold gets in only through two exceptions:

  1. American Gold Eagles, in all four sizes, named in the statute.
  2. Bullion at or above the fineness required for a regulated futures contract, which for gold is .995, provided it is "in the physical possession of a trustee".

That produces a short list for a pound-sized IRA order:

ProductIRA-eligible?
American Gold Eagle (1, ½, ¼, 1/10 oz)Yes
American Gold BuffaloYes (.9999)
Canadian Maple LeafYes (.9999)
Bars from recognized refiners, .995 or finerYes
KrugerrandNo (.9167)
Pre-1933 US gold coins, graded or proof collector coinsNo

Source: 26 U.S.C. §408(m). A pound's worth, fifteen eligible one-ounce coins or a ten-ounce bar and five coins, sits comfortably inside these rules.

Why IRA Gold Can't Live at Your House

The second exception has a condition that matters more than the purity: the bullion must be in the physical possession of the trustee. The IRS repeats it in plain words in its IRA FAQs: the exception applies to highly refined bullion "provided it is in the physical possession of a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee".

Some promoters sell a workaround in which your IRA owns a company and the company buys gold that you keep in a home safe. The same IRS page addresses that directly and says the rule also covers bullion bought through an IRA-owned company. If the arrangement fails, the whole value can be treated as a distribution: taxable, and possibly penalized.

The practical version: if it's IRA gold, you don't get to hold it. Anyone telling you otherwise is describing an arrangement the IRS page above rules out.

How Money Gets Into a Gold IRA

A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA, an ordinary IRA whose custodian permits physical metals. It's usually funded from an existing retirement account, and how the money moves matters.

Trustee-to-trustee transfer or direct rollover. The old account's institution sends the money straight to the new custodian. The IRS says no taxes are withheld from a transfer made this way, and transfers of this kind aren't subject to the one-per-year limit.

Indirect (60-day) rollover. The money is paid to you, and you have 60 days to deposit it in the new account. Miss the deadline and it's a distribution. You can generally do only one IRA-to-IRA rollover of this kind in any 12-month period. The IRS sets all of this out on its rollovers page.

Almost everyone uses the direct route, and a full-service metals company will normally arrange it with you. Ask to see each step in writing before any money moves.

How a Pound Fits Each Path

Delivered. You're free to pick on price and convenience. Fifteen coins if you want to sell in parts; a ten-ounce bar plus five coins for a lower premium; Krugerrands if they're cheapest that day. The shipment arrives insured and needs a signature. From then on, storage and insurance are yours to arrange. How to store a pound of gold covers the options. A pound is small enough that this is realistic at home.

In an IRA. You choose from the eligible list, the dealer ships to the depository, and you receive a statement. You'll never weigh it or count it yourself, so the records matter: ask whether storage is segregated (your pieces kept apart) or commingled (the same quantity of like pieces), and get the depository's name. The custodian and depository charge for their services. Get those costs in writing from the provider itself; figures repeated online are often out of date, so we don't print any.

Both. Nothing stops you doing each: retirement funds into eligible gold at a depository, and a smaller delivered order from savings.

Questions That Settle It

  • Which money are you using? Savings point to delivery. A retirement account you want to move into gold points to an IRA, because withdrawing first would usually mean tax.
  • Do you want to hold it? If physically having the gold is the point, only delivery gives you that.
  • Are you comfortable storing $57,305 at home? If not, a depository is available on either route, not only through an IRA.
  • How soon might you need it? Delivered gold can be sold the same day. IRA gold is sold inside the account, and taking the cash out is a distribution.

If the answers conflict, that's a reason to talk to a tax professional, not a reason to pick the option a salesperson prefers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my gold IRA at home?

No. Federal law requires IRA bullion to be in the physical possession of the account's trustee. The IRS says this also applies when the gold is bought through an IRA-owned company.

Can I hold a pound of gold in an IRA?

Yes, as IRA-eligible coins or bars held at a depository. A pound's worth is a typical size for a gold IRA purchase.

Which gold coins are allowed in an IRA?

American Gold Eagles, and coins that are at least .995 fine such as the Gold Buffalo and the Maple Leaf. Krugerrands and collector coins are not.

Is home delivery gold taxed differently from IRA gold?

Yes. Delivered gold is your own property, and a gain when you sell is taxed under the IRS rules for collectibles. Gold inside an IRA follows the account's tax rules until money or metal is distributed.

Can I move gold I already own into an IRA?

Generally no. IRA contributions and rollovers are made in cash, and the account then buys the gold.
