Gold Bars by the Pound: What Each Size Weighs
$39,295 a 10 oz gold bar
A 1 kilo bar: $126,336
Gold spot $3,929.50/troy oz · $57,305/lb · updated
Quick answer. Gold bars are made in troy ounces and grams, never in pounds. In pounds, a 10 oz bar weighs 0.69 lb, a kilo bar 2.20 lb, a 100 oz bar 6.86 lb and the 400 oz bars held by central banks about 27.4 lb. No refiner makes a standard one-pound bar. The closest single bar to a pound is the 500-gram bar, at 1.10 lb.

Values are pure-gold content at the spot price, before any premium. Pounds are ordinary pounds of 453.59 grams. The 400 oz figure is nominal: bars accepted in the London market range from about 350 to 430 troy ounces, so real ones weigh between roughly 24 and 29.5 pounds.
Why There's No Standard 1 lb Gold Bar
The pound is the one common weight the gold trade never adopted. There are three reasons.
Gold has its own ounce. The troy ounce has been the unit of the bullion market for centuries, and the price you see quoted is always per troy ounce. A bar sized in troy ounces can be priced by multiplying two numbers. A bar sized in ordinary pounds would need a conversion of 14.583 every time it changed hands.
The rest of the world is metric. Outside the United States, bars are cast in grams and kilos. The kilo bar is the workhorse of Asian and European markets. A refiner selling worldwide makes ounce bars for one set of buyers and gram bars for the other, and a pound bar would serve neither.
The big contracts set the sizes. The US futures contract is for 100 troy ounces. The London wholesale market trades 400-ounce bars. Retail sizes are scaled down from those, in ounces and grams, with no pound anywhere in the chain.
So a "pound of gold" is something you assemble. The table shows the awkward part: the pound falls in a gap between the 10 oz bar and the 500-gram bar.
What the "1 lb Gold Bars" Online Really Are
Search any marketplace for a one-pound gold bar and you'll get results, most at a tiny fraction of $57,305. They fall into three groups.
- Plated novelties. Brass, copper or tungsten with a gold-colored coating, often stamped to resemble a refinery bar. Listings usually say "replica", "clad", "plated" or "layered" somewhere. They contain a negligible amount of gold.
- Copper or silver "pound" bars. One-pound bars are common in copper. A gold-colored photo and a careless title can make one look like gold.
- Custom pours. A few small refiners will cast odd weights to order. These are real gold but unrecognized: with no familiar hallmark, a buyer will want to test them, and they sell for less.
The test is the price. Gold is never sold meaningfully below spot. A pound bar listed for less than $57,305 isn't a pound of gold.
Reaching a Pound With Real Bars
Since no single bar is a pound, these are the combinations that come closest:
| Combination | Troy ounces | Pounds | Pieces | Gold value today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 oz bar + five 1 oz bars or coins | 15.000 | 1.029 | 6 | $58,942 |
| Three 5 oz bars | 15.000 | 1.029 | 3 | $58,942 |
| 10 oz bar + four 1 oz pieces | 14.000 | 0.960 | 5 | $55,013 |
| One 500 gram bar | 16.075 | 1.102 | 1 | $63,168 |
| Fifteen 1 oz bars | 15.000 | 1.029 | 15 | $58,942 |
The first row is the usual choice. It lands 0.42 troy ounces over a pound, and it leaves you five small pieces you can sell one at a time without touching the bar. The 500-gram bar is the only single item near a pound, but it's 10% over, and it is all or nothing when you sell.
Bars or Coins for a Pound?
Premium. Bars are cheaper to make than coins, and bigger bars are cheaper per ounce than small ones. Typical ranges from 2026 dealer guides: about 1–2% over spot for kilo bars, 1–3% for 10 oz bars, 2–4% for 1 oz bars, against about 3–6% for American Gold Eagles. On a pound, the gap between a 2% bar order and a 5% coin order is about $1,146 against $2,865 in premium.
Selling in parts. Fifteen coins can be sold fifteen ways. A 10 oz bar can be sold once. If there's any chance you'll want some of the money back before all of it, keep part of the pound in one-ounce pieces.
Recognition. Buy bars from refiners on the London Good Delivery list, sealed in an assay card with a serial number where the size allows. A dealer buying it back checks the name, the seal and the number. A government coin gets the same trust on sight.
IRA rules. Bars qualify for a gold IRA if they're at least .995 fine and are held by the account's trustee. Nearly all modern bars are .9999. See gold at home or in an IRA.
A mix is the common answer: a 10 oz bar for the low premium and one-ounce coins for flexibility. Our pound of gold in coins page covers the coin half of that order.
