THE ORDER
A Pound of Gold, Three Ways
No mint makes a standard one-pound gold bar, so every pound of gold is put together from pieces sold by the troy ounce. A pound is 14.583 troy ounces. These are the three orders people actually place to get there.
15 one-ounce coins
15 troy oz · 1.03 lb of gold
$58,942 at spot
Fifteen Eagles, Buffalos or Maple Leafs. The simplest order, the easiest to sell a few at a time, and $1,637 of gold more than an exact pound.
One 10 oz bar + 5 coins
15 troy oz · 1.03 lb of gold
$58,942 at spot
The same gold in six pieces instead of fifteen. Bars usually carry a lower premium than coins, so this order tends to cost a little less.
Part of a kilo bar
32.15 troy oz · 2.20 lb of gold
$126,336 at spot
A kilo bar is the cheapest gold per ounce, but it holds more than two pounds. A pound is under half of one, and a bar can't be split.

THE UNIT
What "Gold by the Pound" Means When You Buy
Gold is priced and sold by the troy ounce, a 31.10-gram unit that's about 10% heavier than the ounce on a kitchen scale. A pound, the ordinary 453.59-gram pound, holds 14.583 troy ounces. So gold by the pound is simply 14.583 times the ounce price: $57,305 as of November 3, 2026.
Two things follow from that, and both matter when you place an order.
You can't multiply by 16. A pound has 16 kitchen ounces, but the gold price counts troy ounces. Spot times 16 gives $62,872, which overstates a pound by $5,567. Any listing or quote that gets to a "pound" price that way is wrong before the premium is even added.
You order in ounces, not pounds. Dealers, mints and refiners all work in troy ounces and grams. Ask for "a pound of gold" and a good dealer will translate it for you: about fifteen one-ounce coins, or a ten-ounce bar and a handful of coins. That translation is the "three ways" section above, and it is the whole idea of this site. Our guides to a pound of gold in coins and gold bars by the pound take each route piece by piece.
If you only need the number, gold price per pound has it with a table from half a pound to ten.
THE COST
What a Pound Costs Over Spot
The $57,305 figure is the value of the metal alone. Whoever sells it to you adds a premium that covers minting, shipping, insurance and their margin. On gold the premium is a small percentage, but a pound is a large order, so small percentages are real money. Typical ranges reported by 2026 dealer guides, in normal market conditions:
| Format | Typical premium over spot | A pound's worth at the midpoint |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kilo bar | about 1–2% | $58,165 |
| 10 oz bars | about 1–3% | $58,451 |
| 1 oz bars | about 2–4% | $59,024 |
| Krugerrand | about 2–4% | $59,024 |
| Maple Leaf | about 3–5% | $59,597 |
| American Gold Eagle | about 3–6% | $59,884 |
| Fractional coins (½, ¼, 1/10 oz) | higher than all of the above | — |
Each percentage point on a pound is about $573. That is why the mix of pieces matters more on a pound-sized order than on a single coin: moving from all coins to a bar plus coins can change the bill by a four-figure sum.
Premiums are not fixed. They rise when demand jumps, paying by card commonly adds 2–4% over a bank wire, and collectible or "limited" coins carry far more than ordinary bullion. Get every quote as a price per piece, then run it through the premium per pound calculator. Do that with any seller's quote, our sponsored partner's included.
THE BUDGET
How Much Gold Your Budget Buys
Most people arrive at a pound from the other direction: they have a dollar figure and want to know what it turns into. At today's spot price, before premiums:
| Budget | Troy ounces | Pounds of gold |
|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | 2.54 | 0.17 |
| $25,000 | 6.36 | 0.44 |
| $50,000 | 12.72 | 0.87 |
| $100,000 | 25.45 | 1.75 |
These are ceilings. A real order buys slightly less, because of the premium. For any other amount, and for the number of one-ounce coins it buys, use the how much gold can I buy calculator.
THE CHOICE
Delivered to You, or Held in an IRA
A pound of gold can end up in one of two places, and the choice changes what you're allowed to order.
Delivered. You pay with your own money and the gold is shipped, insured, to your address. You can order any coin or bar you like, and you decide where it's kept. Our guide to storing a pound of gold covers a home safe, a bank box and a depository.
In a gold IRA. The gold is bought with retirement funds and must be held by the account's trustee at a depository, not at home. Only certain products qualify: American Gold Eagles, and other coins and bars that are at least .995 fine. You never handle it while it's in the account.
Neither is better in general. Gold at home or gold in an IRA sets the two side by side.
THE STEPS
How to Get Gold by the Pound in 4 Steps
- Turn the pound into pieces. Decide between fifteen coins, a bar plus coins, or bars alone. Coins are easier to sell a few at a time; bars cost less over spot.
- Decide where it will live. Delivery or an IRA. That choice narrows which products you can buy and who has to hold them.
- Get the price per piece in writing. Ask for each product's price, shipping, insurance and any payment surcharge. Check the premium with the calculator.
- Confirm the order and the price lock. Gold moves by the minute. Ask when your price is locked and when payment is due. Our full guide, where to buy gold by the pound, compares the kinds of seller.
FAQ
Gold by the Pound FAQ
Can you buy gold by the pound?
Yes, but not as one item. Gold is sold by the troy ounce, so you buy a pound's worth: 14.583 troy ounces, usually fifteen one-ounce coins or a ten-ounce bar with five coins.
What does gold by the pound cost today?
$57,305 per pound at the spot price, as of November 3, 2026. That is 14.583 troy ounces at $3,929.50 each. A real order costs a little more because of dealer premiums.
Is there a 1 lb gold bar?
Not as a standard product. Refiners make bars in troy ounces, grams and kilos. Many "1 lb gold bars" sold on marketplaces are plated novelty items, not gold. See gold bars by the pound.
How many gold coins are in a pound?
14.58 one-ounce coins hold a pound of gold, so fifteen coins is just over. Fifteen American Gold Eagles weigh about 1.12 pounds on a scale, because each coin is alloyed for hardness. See a pound of gold in coins.
Is this price in dollars or British pounds?
US dollars. "Pound" on this site always means the pound of weight (lb), never pounds sterling.
Does Goldco sell a one-pound gold product?
No. Goldco sells coins and bars by the troy ounce, like every dealer. Buying gold by the pound from Goldco means ordering a pound's worth of those products.
How often does this page update?
Every 6 hours, and the headline price re-checks itself while the page is open. The time of the last price is stamped under the price card.
